Cold Weather Workwear

What to Look for When Choosing Cold Weather Workwear

When choosing clothing for cold weather, think in terms of layering rather than a single garment. Thermal underwear, fleece, beanies, neck gaiters, balaclavas and similar items each support different areas of the body.

Short answer: Identify the weather conditions, working hours and activity level. Then assess the product's material, its role as a layer, its size and wearing comfort together.

Thermal Underwear and Base Layer

Thermal underwear can be worn directly against the skin or as a base layer. Fabric structure, size fit and freedom of movement all matter. Do not assume a specific temperature performance just because a product is labelled “thermal”.

Fleece and Mid Layer

Fleece garments can be worn as a mid layer, with outer layers such as a jacket or rain jacket added on top. However, fleece fabric on its own does not mean waterproof or windproof.

Beanies, Neck Gaiters and Balaclavas

For head and neck items, the material, the area covered and compatibility with other equipment during work are important. Do not use these products in place of an industrial safety helmet or specialised protective equipment.

Size and Room for Layers

When choosing a size for thermal underwear or fleece, consider how the garment fits the body and the layers to be worn over or under it. The same size label does not guarantee the same fit across different product types.

Explore outer layer options

For cold weather use, you can also consider work jackets, fleece jackets and rain jackets as outer layers, depending on your working conditions.
