Outdoor Vests

What to Look for When Choosing an Outdoor Vest

When choosing an outdoor vest, consider the working environment, season, fabric construction, pocket layout, fit and any need for layering together. Lightweight models, multi-pocket vests and products with different lining constructions may not be designed for the same purpose.

Short answer: First decide where you will wear the vest and what layers you will wear it with. Then compare the fabric, pocket layout, lining, size and the clearly stated specifications of each product.

Layering

A vest adds an extra layer around the torso while leaving your arms freer to move. If you plan to wear it with a T-shirt, sweatshirt, fleece or outerwear, allow for those layers when choosing your size.

Choose a Pocket Layout That Suits Your Work

With outdoor vests, the position and size of the pockets, their zip or flap closures and how easy they are to reach during use matter more than the number of pockets. Compare product details against the equipment you need to carry.

Fabric and Lining

Polyester, cotton or other blends, together with fleece or other lining constructions, can affect how a product feels in use. However, do not assume waterproofing, windproofing or a specific thermal performance based on the material name alone.

Size and Freedom of Movement

Compare chest, shoulder and garment length with the size chart, where available. If you will wear a thick layer underneath, choosing by your everyday T-shirt size alone may not be enough.
