Face Shields

What to Consider When Choosing a Face Shield

When choosing face protection, assess all the risks encountered during work together, such as particles, splashes, sparks or welding. Clear face shields and welding helmets are designed for different purposes and cannot automatically be used in place of one another.

Short answer: First identify the risk the face needs protecting against. Then compare the visor or mask type, field of vision, material, attachment method and the standards stated by the manufacturer.

When should a face shield be considered?

Clear face shields can cover a larger area of the face. However, wearing a face shield does not always remove the need for eye protection. Depending on the risk assessment for the job, safety glasses and a face shield may both be required.

Helmet-mounted and headband models

Some face shields are worn directly on the head, while others are designed to be used with a safety helmet. For helmet-mounted products, check that the attachment system is compatible with the helmet being used.

Welding helmets need separate consideration

For masks used in welding, the filter, shade and optical properties are separate technical criteria. For auto-darkening welding helmets, check the technical values and relevant standards stated by the manufacturer for each product.

Visor material and field of vision

The material, size and field of vision of the visor can affect working comfort. For specific risks such as impact or chemical splashes, do not assume a level of protection simply because a clear visor is fitted.

Consider eye protection too

If the eye area also needs separate protection during work, consider suitable safety glasses alongside face protection products.
