Safety Glasses & Goggles

What to Look for When Choosing Safety Glasses

When choosing safety glasses, look beyond lens colour or design: consider the impact, particle, UV, splash and visibility requirements of the work environment together. Open-frame safety glasses and fully enclosed eye protection may not be intended for the same use.

Quick answer: First identify which hazard the eyes need protecting against. Then compare lens type, optical properties, anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings, field of vision and the standards stated by the manufacturer.

Safety glasses vs safety goggles

Classic safety glasses with side arms and goggle-type products that enclose more of the eye area offer different coverage. Assess the product style and the manufacturer's instructions for use according to the dust, splash or particle hazard.

What does lens colour change?

Clear, smoke (tinted), yellow and other lens colours may suit different uses depending on lighting conditions. Do not judge the level of protection from lens colour alone; check the markings on the product and its technical data.

Anti-fog and scratch resistance

Anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings can improve comfort during work. However, these features do not replace protection against impact or chemical splashes.

Eyewash products do not replace safety glasses

Eyewash solutions and stations are products for emergency support. They should not be considered a substitute for preventive personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses or face shields.

Do you also need face protection?

If the face as well as the eyes needs protecting during work, consider face shields and other face protection products as well.
