Work Aprons & Coats

What to Look for When Choosing a Work Apron

When choosing a work apron, look beyond colour or style: consider the intended use, fabric composition, sleeve design, pocket layout and fit together. Women's and men's work aprons, sleeveless styles, waist aprons, kitchen aprons and butcher aprons may suit different working needs.

Short answer: Define how you work day to day, then compare sleeve type, fabric, pocket design and size measurements. If you need protection against specific hazards, check the manufacturer's technical and certification details, not just the product name.

Sleeveless vs long-sleeve work aprons

Sleeveless aprons leave the arms uncovered, while long-sleeve styles also cover the arms. When choosing, consider freedom of movement, the clothing to be worn underneath and the product's own measurements.

The groups below are based on the sleeve, strap, cut, fabric and usage information on the product pages. Colour and size options are listed on each product page.

If you need certified protection against heat, sparks or chemicals, do not use a general work apron in place of protective clothing; check that the relevant standard is stated on the product page.

Why does fabric composition matter?

Polyester, viscose, cotton or other fabric blends can affect a product's texture, care requirements and feel in use. Two work aprons in the same colour may differ in fabric composition and cut, so always check the fabric details on the product page.

Waist, bib and full-length apron styles

Waist aprons do not cover the upper body; bib-style aprons with straps cover the front of the body. For kitchen, service, butchery or general work, apron length, fastening method and pocket placement can be decisive.

How to choose the right work apron size

If the product has a size chart, compare the chest, shoulder, garment length and, where relevant, sleeve measurements with your own. The same size label does not guarantee the same fit across different models.

Work apron FAQ

What is a work apron and what is it for?

A work apron is a garment that protects your clothing from dirt, stains and liquid splashes while you work, and its pockets let you keep small items to hand. Long-sleeve front-fastening models are preferred in healthcare, laboratories and offices; bib or waist-tie models in kitchens and service; and waterproof PVC models for wet work. A general work apron does not replace certified chemical-protective or heat-protective clothing.

What does alpaca apron mean?

In workwear, “alpaca” is the trade name for a plain-weave fabric made from a polyester and viscose blend. The alpaca aprons in our catalogue are 75% polyester / 25% viscose. Compared with cotton, this blend creases less and holds its shape better through frequent washing.

What is a waterproof PVC apron used for?

The PVC-coated surface limits liquid penetrating the fabric and wipes clean easily. This makes it suitable for wet work such as dishwashing, cleaning, and fish and meat preparation. If you will be working with chemicals, check that a chemical protection standard is stated on the product label.

Are chef jackets and aprons worn together?

Yes. In the kitchen, the chef jacket is the outer garment, while the apron protects the front of the jacket and trousers from stains. You can find chef jackets in our Work Jackets & Scrubs category.
