What to Look for When Choosing a Fleece Jacket

When choosing a fleece top, look beyond thickness or colour: consider the working environment, layering needs, zip design, pocket layout and fit together. Fleece garments can be worn on their own as an outer layer or as a mid-layer under a jacket.

Short answer: Determine the temperatures you will work in and your layering needs, then compare the fabric construction, zip, collar type, pocket layout and size measurements. Do not assume wind or water protection just because a product is called “fleece”.

How to Wear Fleece as a Mid-Layer

In cool weather, fleece garments can be worn on their own or as a mid-layer under a work coat or parka. Taking the thickness of the base and outer layers into account when choosing your size is important for freedom of movement.

Full-Zip Designs and Collar Types

Full-zip models can be practical for putting on, taking off and ventilation. A stand-up collar or other collar styles can change how the garment feels to wear. Choose according to your working environment and personal comfort needs.

Is Fleece Waterproof or Windproof?

Fleece fabric does not automatically make a garment waterproof or windproof. If these features are not clearly stated in the product description, do not make assumptions based on fabric type alone.

Fleece Sizing: What to Check

Compare the chest, shoulder, sleeve and garment length with the model's size chart, where available. If you plan to wear a T-shirt or thermal underwear underneath and a work coat on top, allow room for layering.
