What to Look for When Choosing Outdoor Clothing

When choosing outdoor clothing, look beyond the design: consider the environment of use, the season, the fabric construction, freedom of movement, pocket layout and the need for layering together. Trousers, vests and outerwear may be designed for different activities and working conditions.

Short answer: First decide where and in what weather conditions you will use the garment. Then compare the fabric, size, pocket layout, layering needs and the product's own specifications.

Fabric and freedom of movement

With outdoor products, the fabric construction, the fit and the comfort it provides during movement all matter. Elastane, cotton, polyester or different blends may vary from model to model. Do not draw conclusions about performance from the fabric name alone.

Why does pocket layout matter?

On outdoor trousers and vests, the position of the pockets, their zip or flap closure and how easy they are to reach during use matter more than the number of pockets. Compare product details according to the equipment you need to carry.

Do not assume water or wind protection

Calling a product “outdoor” does not automatically mean it is waterproof, windproof or resistant to particular weather conditions. If you need such features, rely on the explicit technical information in the product description.

Size and layering

For trousers, compare waist and inside leg measurements; for vests and outerwear, compare chest and shoulder measurements against the product's size chart, where available. If you will wear the garment with base or outer layers, allow extra room for movement.

More outerwear options

For cool and changeable weather, you may also want to consider jackets, fleece and other outerwear options.
