What to Look for When Choosing Head Protection

When choosing head protection, look beyond product type or colour: consider the impact risk in the work environment, wearing time, adjustment system, ventilation and any electrical risk together. Industrial safety helmets, bump caps, work caps and chin straps do not provide the same level of protection.

In short: First identify the risk you are exposed to. Then check the product type, the relevant standard, the head-size adjustment and the manufacturer's technical data. Where there are specific electrical risks, do not assume a standard industrial safety helmet is suitable.

A safety helmet and a bump cap are not the same thing

Industrial safety helmets and bump caps are intended for different uses. A bump cap does not automatically replace a standard industrial safety helmet. Assess the level of protection the job requires together with the manufacturer's technical data.

Adjustment system and head size

Ratchet or other adjustment mechanisms can affect how the product sits on the head. It is important that the helmet stays securely in place and matches the head-size range specified by the manufacturer.

Ventilation and work environment

Vented and non-vented models may be intended for different work environments. When choosing, consider temperature, wearing time and the specific risks of the job together.

For work involving electrical risk

A product name containing "electrician's helmet" is not sufficient on its own. Separately check the specifications required for electrical use, the relevant standard and the manufacturer's documentation. Do not treat general industrial helmet properties as equivalent to electrical insulation properties.
