What is a hi-vis vest?

Short answer: A hi-vis vest makes the wearer visible in daylight thanks to its fluorescent fabric and in the dark, in headlights, thanks to its retroreflective tape. The product pages in this category state EN ISO 20471; check the class (1, 2 or 3) on the vest label. A vest on its own can reach at most Class 2; Class 3 requires a sleeved jacket or trousers worn with it.

What to check when choosing a hi-vis vest

  • Class: check the EN ISO 20471 class on the label. Roadside and fast-traffic work may call for a higher class in the risk assessment. What the classes mean: hi-vis vest classes.
  • Colour: choose for contrast with the background. Orange usually stands out better against vegetation and snow, yellow against concrete and asphalt.
  • Size: if the vest goes over a jacket, consider one size up; the tape should sit on the body, not hang.
  • Logo: printing or badges reduce the fluorescent area; keep the print within the limits allowed by the manufacturer to keep the class.
  • Care: the number of washes and the temperature are on the label; replace the vest when the tape cracks, peels or turns dull.

What affects the price of a hi-vis vest?

Price depends on the fabric, the type and width of the tape, the fastening (zip, hook-and-loop, buckle, clip), pockets and logo printing. For team orders we prepare a bulk vest and logo printing quotation.

Frequently asked questions about hi-vis vests

Is the fluorescent colour the same as the reflective tape?

Fluorescent colour works in daylight; reflective tape works in the dark when light shines on it. Hi-vis vests combine both.

How many washes does a hi-vis vest last?

The manufacturer states on the label how many washes the tape keeps its performance for. Replace the vest when the tape cracks, peels or turns dull.

Who has to provide hi-vis vests?

In many countries, PPE identified by the workplace risk assessment is provided by the employer free of charge. In Türkiye this follows the PPE Use Regulation. More: employer PPE obligations.
