The right size of safety shoe is chosen according to the length of your foot in centimetres. Measure your feet in the evening, standing up and wearing the socks you will wear with the shoes; go by the longer of your two feet and check the brand's own size chart. The same size number corresponds to different foot lengths across brands: for example, EU 42 equals a foot length of 26.7 cm in the Mekap chart and 26.3–27.0 cm in the uvex chart. If you fall between two sizes, choose the next size up, as Mekap recommends.
The values below are taken from the size chart of Store Mekap, Mekap's official store (foot length, cm). The Segura, Jeriko, Atlas, Policap, Jüpiter, Gripper, Vibram, Loder and Rover sole series in the chart use the same measurements; in the Comfort series, the same size corresponds to a foot length approximately 1.4 cm shorter.

Brands' size charts differ from one another. For EU size 42, foot length is 26.7 cm at Mekap and 26.3–27.0 cm at uvex. Some ranges, such as Comfort, measure differently even within the same brand. So rather than the size you have worn before, go by your foot measurement and the chart for the product's brand.
Your foot length is what matters, not your casual shoe size. Measure your foot and find the matching size in the brand's chart; if you fall between two values, choose the larger size.
In the Mekap chart, EU size 39 corresponds to a foot length of 24.7 cm and EU size 40 to 25.3 cm; the difference is about 0.6 cm. At uvex, EU size 39 covers 241–247 mm and EU size 40 covers 248–255 mm.
27.3 cm foot length in the Mekap chart (26 cm in the Comfort range), 271–277 mm in the uvex chart.
