PPE & Safety Equipment Guide
A comprehensive guide to every PPE category, from hard hats and masks to gloves and safety harnesses, with EN standards and key selection criteria.

Safety equipment covers the full range of personal protective equipment (PPE) that protects workers against physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic risks in the workplace. In Türkiye, under Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, employers must identify this equipment through a risk assessment and provide it to workers free of charge.

What Is Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)?

PPE means any device or equipment that a worker wears, holds or carries to protect themselves against one or more hazards. Safety helmets, gloves, safety glasses, masks, hearing protection and safety shoes all fall within this definition.

Head Protection

A safety helmet (hard hat) is used against head risks such as impact, penetration, electricity and chemical splashes. Helmets conforming to EN 397 must stay within specified deformation limits when struck by falling objects.

  • Class E (Electrical): provides electrical insulation up to 440 V.
  • Class HV (High Voltage): high-voltage protection up to 1,000 V.
  • Bump cap: protects against head bumps in areas with low ceilings; it is not a substitute for a safety helmet.

Eye and Face Protection

  • Safety glasses (EN 166): against dust, small particles and liquid splashes.
  • Protective visor: protects the whole face against large particles and chemical splashes.
  • Welding helmet (EN 169): against UV and infrared radiation, available in different shade levels.

Hearing Protection

Hearing protection is mandatory in environments above 85 dB(A) (TS EN ISO 4869).

  • Ear plugs: lightweight and portable; suitable for prolonged exposure.
  • Ear muffs: easy to put on and take off; preferred for intermittent noisy work.
The higher the SNR value, the better the noise reduction. Subtracting the SNR from the ambient noise level gives the effective level to which the worker is exposed.

EN 374Chemical permeationChemicals, laboratories, cleaning
EN 407Thermal (flame, contact heat)Welding, foundry, glass furnaces
EN 511ColdCold stores, outdoor work in winter

Fall Protection Systems

Fall protection is mandatory for work at heights of 2 metres and above. These systems fall under Category III PPE.

  • Full body harness (EN 361): Distributes fall-arrest forces across the whole body; a waist belt is no substitute.
  • Energy-absorbing lanyard / connecting element (EN 354, EN 355): Selected according to the available fall clearance.
  • Lifelines: For work over long distances where no fixed anchor point is available.
Important:Safety belts (waist belts) are no longer approved as Category III PPE. A full body harness must always be used for fall protection.

PPE Care and Shelf Life

  • Damaged PPE must be taken out of service immediately; it cannot be repaired.
  • For equipment containing elastomers, a maximum service life of 5 years from the date of manufacture is recommended.
  • A safety helmet or harness that has sustained an impact should be replaced, even before its service life expires.
  • Gloves exposed to chemicals should be inspected after every use and discarded if they show discolouration or swelling.

FAQ

Is purchasing safety equipment a legal requirement?

Yes. In Türkiye, under Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331 and the PPE Regulation, employers are obliged to select and provide suitable PPE and to supervise its use. Administrative fines are imposed where shortcomings are found.

Can an employee refuse to use PPE?

If the employer has provided training and supplied the PPE, refusal is contrary to occupational health and safety legislation in Türkiye and may lead to disciplinary action.

Is there a real difference between FFP2 and FFP3 masks?

The 5% difference in filtration becomes decisive where toxic dusts and biological hazards are involved. FFP3 is mandatory in environments involving asbestos, radioactive particles or a high risk of infection.

Is a safety belt the same as a safety harness?

No. An old-style waist belt can cause internal injuries in a fall and is no longer accepted as approved PPE. A full body harness is mandatory.
